Scuderia Toro Rosso is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Design Engineer to join our F1 team in Faenza.

 

The Role:

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will have to design with high attentiveness to details the structural mechanical and composite components, meeting packaging and specification constraints. In your role you will have to communicate regarding function of suspension and driver control systems.

 

What you will do:

  • Work with concept, vehicle performance and aerodynamic groups to maximise suspension and driver controls impact on overall car performance
  • Maintain and develop good relationships with other departments
  • Complete detailed design work, including hand calculations and detail drawings, to a high standard
  • Issue documentation for component testing and trackside operations
  • Management of actions to deal with quality issues during production
  • Develop and manage relationships with suppliers and technical partners
  • Keep up-to-date with all latest technical developments which can be applied
  • Provide flexible attendance and attitude to work, both in line with the requirements of the role and any specific requirements of the projects.
  • Work in a professional manner at all times regardless of the task set and be pro-active in promoting a positive image for the department / team/ sponsors.


What you need:

  • Degree level in Mechanical Design Engineering or similar
  • Extensive Automotive design experience at a senior level, ideally in F1
  • Excellent English language written and spoken, knowledge of Italian would be beneficial
  • Proven experience on Siemens NX CAD software, equivalent knowledge of other applications are acceptable
  • Knowledge of metallic material uses and treatments
  • Good understanding of composite materials and their production
  • Able to effectively manage tasks under high pressure working conditions
  • Ability to scope new tasks thoroughly
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely

The Role:

The Senior Composite R&D Technologist is responsible for retaininig and developing the know-how of composite materials within STR.
Moreover the role has the scope to support the composite design and production process by defining proper guidelines and technological constraints.

What you will do:

Relatively to the tasks listed in the previous section, you will have the responsibility:
  • To define the test activities to research new composite materials and processes;
  • To work with RD lab to define the correct procedures for composite material testing;
  • To define and optimize the cure cycles used for car parts production;
  • To compile and release plybooks for car parts production
  • To interact with both internal STR departments (Design, Production, Quality Control) and external suppliers;
  • To advise Designers on lamination details related to Manufacturing limitations/constraints and develop the relative tricks and adjustment while creating lamination informations (ply book, schemes, processes)
  • To provide flexible attendance and attitude to work, both in line with the requirements of the role and any specific requirements of the projects;
  • To work in a professional manner at all times regardless of the task set and be pro-active in problem solving.
What do you need:
  • Extensive Composite material experience at a senior level, ideally in F1
  • Degree in Material Sciencies or similar
  • Broad understanding of composite prepreg design and production
  • Excellent Knowledge of material testing, both by mechanical and chemical/physical point of view (i.e. DSC, DMA)
  • Good knowledge  of the tools used for ply draping and layup simulation (Fibersim, Laminate Tools)
  • Good Knowledge of software tools for plybook compiling (Corel Draw)

  • Conduct wind tunnel testing and reporting of results

  • A strong aerodynamic academic background of minimum degree level

  • Asses surface quality and FIA legality of all group project surface files. Feedback suggested improvements to other users as necessary.
  • Develop time saving efficiencies within the surface model structures.
  • Work with CAD specialists to develop software improvements, including macro’s, to add efficiencies to the surfacing process.
  • Monitor and adjust project specifications to suit varying workload and deadlines.
  • Finalize files, including legality checks, of surface to be released to full size production.

Vehicle Performance Engineer

The Role:

The Performance Engineer is responsible for attending all race and test events as part of the Race Engineering team. In this role you will be responsible for analysing car data, suggesting setup directions to Race Engineer, supporting car preparation and chassis related electronic mapping for improving on-track performance of STR cars. You will also be responsible for identifying main car limitation and supporting car development in the short (race by race) and medium (current season) terms.

You will also have the exciting chance to support simulator activity and driver preparation, as well as ensuring an open and honest collaboration with other car crew and between Race Engineering and Vehicle Performance sub-groups, aiming for continuous improvement.


What you will do:

  • Support car setup definition between simulator, pre-event and in-event activities
  • Analyse car data to provide quantified and data driven recommendations for improving car performance.
  • Work with Race Engineer & other Vehicle Performance sub-groups to support car setup definition, short and medium-term development and simulator activity.
  • Execute the day-to-day tasks, providing regular feedback and updates to Race Engineer and Chief Race Engineer.
  • In rotation with other Race Engineering members, support simulator sessions in-situ ensuring efficient collaboration with simulator engineer, factory-based members and Red Bull Technology engineers.
  • To maintain and develop good relationships with Race & Control engineers.
  • To support development of new data analysis methodologies for implementation in VPG data science framework.
  • Provide flexible trackside attendance and attitude to work, both in line with the requirements of the role and any specific requirements of the VPG activities.
  • To work in a professional manner at all times regardless of the task set and be pro-active in promoting a positive image for the department / team/ sponsors.

What you need:

  • Extensive F1 experience at a Performance Engineer level, ideally experience in vehicle dynamics, tyre engineering and aero performance areas.
  • Strong, broad understanding of F1 car performance, car data analysis, simulations and interaction with driver.

  • Have open and honest collaboration with other car crew and between the various groups involved in the car setup definition
  • Provide technical input for data analysis methodologies improvement
